GISRUK 2010
GIS Research UK is the leading GIS research conference in the UK, and this year it is hosted at UCL.
As part of the run up to the conference GISRUK have teamed up with the GeoInformation Group who are one of the sponsors of the 18th GISRUK conference. As part of this commitment a challenge for the academic community utilising the recently launched large scale mapping suite UKMap is set. UKMap is a high quality geographic information database. There are many ways in which this information can be used and displayed. Here is your chance to get your hands on a one square kilometre area of the data based around UCL and use it within an innovative application of your choice. The Challenge
Show an innovative way in which UKMap can be used and displayed for the potential benefit of a specific market sector, organisation or research area. For example:
- a clear thematic visualistion of land use and POI
- integration of UKMap with other datasets for measurement of social indicators
- effective 3D modelling

Landmap offers a wide selection of The GeoInformation Group datasets such as aerial photography, LiDAR and Historic Aerial Photography.
How to Enter
Request the UKMap data and user guide. You will then be sent a licence that you need to complete and return before receiving the link to download the data. When you have created the application, email 500 words to describe your entry with any supporting material (for example, screenshots, URL, GIS database, Powerpoint, etc) to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The Prize
All entries will be judged and the winner announced during the GISRUK conference by Dr. Muki Haklay, UCL, and Alun Jones, The GeoInformation Group's MD. To UKMap or Not?
In addition to this challenge Landmap is interested in your views for provision of the full coverage of this data through Landmap. Data purchasing budgets are very limited we welcome suggestions and quantifiable additional ideas for the use of UKMap data in teaching and research. Contributed ideas will be used to build up a case for funding enabling us to acquire a licence for this data for free provision through Landmap. Please submit contributions and support via the Landmap Helpdesk.
